Range rover L332 engine 4.4
Range rover L332 engine 4.4
can anybody explain to me if the 4.4 v8 engines fitted to 2005 and 2006 range rover sport is the bmw one... or a jag AJV8.?
im toying with the idea of getting a v8 rangie sport. i hear horror storys with the 4.2 supercharged one (head valves)
is the 4.4 N/A engine ok for gas on a 2005/6 sport? is the engine a bmw m62 or jag AJv8????
cheers

Re: Range rover L332 engine 4.4
I 'think' the sport has not got the bmw engine fitted in any variant ie all are the jag unit either 4.4 n.a or the 4.2 or 5l s/c
I know the full fat has both engines fitted in the years you're looking at.

Re: Range rover L332 engine 4.4
That's right, the Sport (L320, aka Disco 3 in a posh frock) never got the BMW engine, all models have the Ford/Jag AJV8 units. The L322 Range Rover had the BMW engine up until 2005 MY, after that, they got the one with plasticine valve seats too. The Sport is also the one where the tank mounting isn't brilliant either as the underslung spare wheel, where a tank would be fitted, sits on a slope so the tank has to hang down at the back to keep it level.

Re: Range rover L332 engine 4.4
are the valve seats ok/hardened on the AJV8? can it safely be LPG'd?
(they are about with lpg)

Re: Range rover L332 engine 4.4
AJV8, in common with all modern Ford engines, has valve seats made from 'I can't believe it's not butter', a valve saver is a must if you want to convert it.

Re: Range rover L332 engine 4.4
right i see.
i dont want to let that put me off... so what are my options? hardened valve seats or lube system.
pulling the heads todo the valve seats dosent put me off as i can do the fitting work my self... cost of gaskets and if stretch bolts are used/needed need to be taken into account.
id love a v8 though

Re: Range rover L332 engine 4.4
Personally if it were me, I'd go for the L322 with BMW engine. I've driven both and you immediately know that the Sport is only a Disco under the skin. The L322 comes with the BMW engine so no valve saver needed and has a spare wheel well to fit the tank in too.
But, if you don't mind doing the work to get the heads uprated on the AJV8, then why not.

This thread's getting old but thought I'd put my 2 pennies worth in...
Totally agree with Gilbert on preferred models but if you're not too concerned about pulling heads and putting new seats and valves in, why worry about model choice - A valve lube should prevent any issues but if there were any, then that would be the time to pull the heads and do valve work?

ive bought myself a 2006 range rover sport 4.4 AJv8. (65k miles)
i would like to look into converting it, idealy i would like to undertake the conversion myself. so then i know the system/set up and can work on it when required.
i would hope the 4.4 N/A v8 engine should be much simpler install than the S/C version.
Re: Range rover L332 engine 4.4
Tha 4.4 N/A engine is simpler to convert than the S/C engines, how much so will depend, I suppose, on how many of both you have done! Most bits needed for the S/C are still needed for the N/A but installing things like manifold nozzles is easier on the N/A.
Coincidentally I recently answered an email from someone asking about the pros and cons of converting a Jag with an N/A V8 and a Disco of none-disclosed year. Wanted a car for towing his caravan.... Told him - If the caravan was always going to be attached it would be the Disco eh! Depending on year of Disco, the Jag and Disco might have many the same concerns and need much the same parts to convert.
If you want to convert your Jag engine'd Disco I could sell you a kit, the price won't be much different to trade suppliers but I am contactable both inside and outside of office hours for tech support and do things like checking over installs, putting minor install issues right and calibration for free.
