Servicing LPG?

Hi everyone,
I have been doing some work to my engine and want to service the LPG on my 97 Land Rover Discovery v8. What I need to know is what exactly needs to be serviced baring in mind I've had the Disco for about 3 years now and have never done any kind of service and I know this isn't good and so I want to get it sorted. LPG runs fine as far as I'm aware but then I don't know any different as this is my first car with LPG. Any advice and help would be great.

The only thing that needs a service on a single point like you have is periodically draining the heavy ends from the vaporiser and changing the filter that will be fitted in the front end shut off solenoid that should be fitted prior to the vaporiser. A quick clean of the stepper with a squirt of carb cleaner and/or WD40 every so often will stop it from sticking too. Connecting a computer to the Leonardo just to check that it is all working as it should isn't a bad idea either. In saying that, if the performance on gas is the same as on petrol, it isn't far out.

The heavy ends is that the little black cap at the bottom of the vaporizer? Image


There seems to a similar one at the top as well is this wright?

The one at the bottom is the drain plug, the one at the top is the bias adjuster (so leave it alone!) and, yes, that is the front solenoid. The bottom bowl contains a replaceable filter element.

How often should I replace the filter element and drain the vaporizer?

About every 15-20,000 miles unless you fill up from upturned red Propane bottles or think you have filled up with dirty gas and start to get problems. Even then you will probably find not much dirt in there.

Get it all up to temperature, before stopping to remove the drain plug. The stuff is waxy, but runny when hot.

What comes out of the vaporizer? Liquid or some other kind of substance so I can be prepared for what comes out.

It looks like a brownish oil and has a similar viscosity when hot. Wear latex gloves though, the stuff stinks and if you get it on your hands you'll still be able to smell it days afterwards!

I second that ! I left a canister filter element and bowl on top of a toolbox. Went to pick it up when I was having a tidy. Spilt the contents straight down the front of my overalls.
2 washes later and it still stinks. Unfortunately they are really expensive beta ones. So I'm loathed to chuck them in the bin !
