#1 Post by marcus » Fri Nov 18, 2011 5:12 pm

2001 Jaguar S-Type SE Automatic
Metallic Black
Ivory Interior
Nice condition for age (Photos to follow shortly)
118,600 miles

The Good
Fully Certified Professional Zavolli sequential LPG conversion (upto 50mpg equivalent on the motorway)
57L lpg tank (replaces spare wheel so still has the standard amount of boot space)
Flash-lube system fitted (essential on S-type V6 LPG conversions due to soft valve seats)
Gearbox recently serviced and torque converter replaced
Ignition Coils replaced (Sept 2010)
Private Plate included
Heater control valve replaced with a brand new part (these start to go at around 100K miles)
New windscreen March 2011
New Anti-roll bar bushes Sept 2010
MOT until 26/05/2012

The Bad
LPG is probably due a service (I may have spare filters for this in the garage which I will include in the sale)
Rear parking sensors have stopped working

The car has developed an intermittent fault where by the gearbox will only engage drive once the car is warm. Looks like it maybe be sticky valve on the gearbox oil pump (Sonnax do a replacement (part # 56200-03K. Takes a few minutes to warm up but once engaged it will get you where you need to go. This fault has only recently appeared and I unfortunately I don't have the time to fix this myself. Ive traveled a few hundred miles in the car since this problem first appeared. The Intermittent loss of drive seems more likely to happen if the car hasn't been used for a few days. Also if in heavy, stop start traffic, for a long period of the time (rush hour etc) the revs drop if stationary and in drive (ie foot on the brakes at lights), occasionally it will stall, but putting the car in neutral raises the idle back to normal (could be the torque converter starts to engage). Hopefully this will help shed light on the problem.

Car has been stood for a couple of weeks, but started regularly.
One tyre will need replacing
No Tax.

Located in Rochdale.

Looks a very nice car for the money and I might have been interested myself if it was capable of pulling a 3 tonne trailer but I don't think it is. However, I'm interested in the gearbox fault and may have a pointer for you to follow. Did the problem start after the gearbox was serviced? I was given an Audi A4 a few years ago that did the very same thing but it had only started a week or so after it had been into an Audi main dealer for a full service which included a gearbox fluid change. You could start it from cold, put it in drive and it did nothing. But if you held the revs at around 2,000 rpm in drive with your left foot on the brake pedal, you could feel it start to bite after about 20 seconds. After that it wasn't too bad although it did seem to have a mind of it's own where it would happily change up and down the gears if you drove at a constant speed below 40mph, above that it was fine. I checked the fluid levels, took the bottom off the gearbox to check the filter and couldn't find anything wrong so I spoke to a loacl autobox specialist. He hadn't a clue until I happened to mention get coverd in drips of red ATF while I was under it checking the filter. We checked the gearbox type and found it had been filled with the wrong fluid. Seems that it had been built at a time when there was a change of gearbox type which used a different fluid. Drained it out and filled it with the correct stuff and it was fine. So much for main dealers.....

Might of hit the nail on the head!

Is this in the £260 a year tax bracket?

Thanks for the input. Afraid it isn't the oil. It's exactly the make and grade etc that was used when it was serviced previously. It would have been nice if it had been something simple like this though. Definitely feels like something mechanical unfortunately.

I will check on the tax but I think it might be cheaper....

Tax will depend on exactly when in 2001 it was registered. If pre April it will be on the older flat rate scheme so will be just over £200 a year, if post April it will be on the sliding scale depending on emissions.

Auto box is a common problem on these, not a lot to do apart from a rebuild or second had gearbox, only problem with a second hand box is it will inherit the same problem over time. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Who makes the box? Not ZF is it?
Nevermind, Google says pre-2002 they were a Ford box. Later changed to a slightly more reliable ZF box. Why aren't they all using Aisin boxes FFS??
