Wasn't getting anywhere this morning, swapped the old Lambda probe in and it gave the same readings. So I took the TEC97 ECU off the car and made up a test harness on the workbench, using a variable psu to inject different voltages into the lambda sensor pin of the ECU.

Needless to say it performs perfectly on the bench, so I'm no further into finding out the cause of my problem. I did check out the different options for Lambda sensors, and while there are four options for 5v sensors, the 0-5v (+) appears identical to the 5-0v (-), and the same with the 0-5v (-) and 5-0v (+).

Next step is going to be breaking into the wiring harnesses and seeing if there's any bad connections. With the TEC97 box removed, I did put the 'scope probe on the Lambda signal pin of it's connector, and it appeared to be OK there.

BTW I also tried the Polish TEC99 software, and it seems to work fine on a TEC97 box, so an English language version would be gratefully received. ;)

I also tried the TEC99 EVO software but it wouldn't connect, The only have an Italian version, so I have no idea if the error message indicated a COM port problem, or if it's not compatible.

I'll upload the one I have on Monday when I'm back in the UK. Uploading stuff could seriously damage the data allowance on my phone.......

Thanks for uploading that, but I only see an 'autorun.inf' and an icon file. It appears the 'setup.exe' referred to in the autorun file is missing.

I see all three files, the autorun, icon and setup. Maybe your firewall or virus software is blocking exe files?

I tried your link Gilbert and also only saw the same files as Dave. And I don't know how to use Dropbox properly so I don't know if my links will work lol..

Setup file is only 210Kb, if Dave PM's me or Gilbert his email address we could email the setup file(s).

Your link appears to work ok Simon - I can get the file from it and it does run on a xp vm (won't run on windows 10 though!)

I've downloaded and fired up Simon's TEC97 file in dosbox and it looks like it should work, though it's a bit late in the evening to drag the laptop outside and see if it connects to the ECU box!

Gilbert's zipped file has also downloaded OK, with all three files present. I'll fire up a VM and give it a try in the morning as well. Not sure why the .exe isn't showing in google drive, it won't be firewall or antivirus as I'm running Linux which doesn't care about windows viruses. ;) It could be that google drive is making the file private as sharing executable files could be dangerous, the same way as you can't send a .exe via gmail without zipping it up first.

Many thanks to both of you for all your efforts to help me out with this.

That did the trick!

Using Simon's DOS version of the TEC97 software, I managed to get everything tuned in properly, and now I'm seeing the mixture reading ranging up and down nicely. I'm really not sure what I was doing wrong when I attempted the same thing with the Polish version of the software. I'm assuming that my own uncertainty with what I was seeing was causing me to confuse myself even further.

Fingers crossed that will be enough to get it through the MOT for another year.

I can confirm that the windows version of the TEC99 software (that Gilbert supplied) will not communicate with a TEC97 box, even though the polish 'TEC 99 RPO' DOS software does appear to work.

Next step is to replace the burned connector on the wiring loom, as the burned up area next to the blue wire made the plastic latch on the connector housing go brittle and break off when I first unplugged it. I'm going to pick up the proper contact removal tool and with a bit of luck I'll simply slide out the contacts from the old connector housing and push them into a new housing. The contact on the blue solenoid valve wire will also be replaced with a new one, as I don't want to risk a poor connection from the heat damaged pin burning up the new connectors.
