Is there definitely a fault with the vap though? Given the expansion of LPG as it changes to a gas, there wouldn't need to be much left to hiss for quite a while, especially if it's escaping through a joint that's just cracked open. Are there any problems with running?

I drove my Van until the VAP would no longer rev the motor, then i went about letting the rest of the LPG out of the tank.
Well 40 minutes later the gas stopped coming out.

It has a mixer on the carby, VAP is a BRC which is positioned under the car in the transmission tunnel on the passenger side.
