 Post subject: byonet filler

Hi
I've converted a Honda civic 1.4'96 recently with Stag4. Unfortunately car didn't pass safety check...
I've fitted hidden filler and that's the reason that car failed.Guy from garage said that "hidden filler" is not legal and i should have bayonet filler.
Is it true???
I've looked in C.O.P 11 and there's nothing about type of filler that you must install.

CoP11 says, "The fill connector shall be compatible with the mating coupling of the refuelling facilities. The need for adaptors shall be discouraged."

So while not strictly illegal, unless CoP11 has been updated recently and my version is out of date, not recommended as you have to screw an adapter on. I've seen those fillers though and suspect that when using one with an adapter it won't meet the pull test as the flimsy little 10mm brass thread on the adapter would snap off. I've seen one of those adapters being used on a car fitted with an Italian cup filler and the adapter snapped off under the weight of the filler gun.

It is a judgement call for the inspector.

I wouldn't sign off a 10mm thread adaptor either, though I wouldn't look so unkindly on the big 22mm style. Yes, we all know folks get away with it in seemingly stricter Germany, but it'd be me that has to sign it off here.

Adaptors are of course sometimes necessary, e.g. when travelling, or will be if Euro-wotsit pumps begin to arrive here.
Everyday use of an adaptor is an avoidable risk, hence the "discouragement".
Everyday use of an adaptor type prone to breakage is unnecessary risk and completely avoidable. This is a safety check, after all.
