I am more than happy to moderate or do anything else to help keep the forum alive. I' m a MOD on a couple of other forums so have reasonable experience on that side of things.

The end of the month is rapidly approaching and no news. With a number of people offering to take on the running of the forum, I'd have expected an announcement of who is taking it on by now.

It might be an idea if you wanted to email Damien and see if he has any answer? It may be that he has just got sidetracked with other stuff?

If whoever ends up hosting the replacement needs any more Mods I can assist there if needed. Also the other forum (lpginfo) appears to me to be dead - last time i looked there were no posts in over a month.

I don't know if anyone else has heard anything from Damian recently, I haven't heard from him but will email him now.

Most here will remember you volunteering to be a mod on RRpub and there's a link to the thread on that forum above but was a good idea to mention it on this forum too Bri. So that's 3 volunteer moderators so far regardless of who takes the forum over.

The other forum Lpginfo has never been busy, still up and running but with nothing like the level of content of this forum, plus it's origin story would be off-putting for a lot of people... it's an offshoot of a grudge site.

My sent email reads:

Hi Damian,

Any news on the LPG forum situation?

My offer to take it over still stands but I would be even more pleased to see OnTheFenceDev take it over.

There are 3 volunteer moderators, all long term respected users of LPGforum who would take on the role if either I or OnTheFenceDev (or, I'm confident, if another party took the forum over).

Hope you had a nice holiday.

Regards,

Simon Andrew

No worries but sod's law.. Have tried to call you a few times since then and have been relatively lethargic the last couple of days, only sorted 6 vehicles in that time but have a 600+bhp supercharged Merc E55AMG coming in for conversion tomorrow.

Well, August is over and it's still here. Any news from anybody?

Yes you are correct it is still here and will be until it has moved to the new owner. Sorry, yay again for my lack of responses and I won’t bore you with excuses. Hope to get some movement on this soon.

Something I do need to clarify are any GDPR requirements and if I can simply hand over the database which does contain personal information without any safeguards, or whether I need to do a data cleanup first. Any thoughts here ?

Damian

I've had GDPR rammed down my throat at work ad nauseam as we hold personal data and the organisation don't want anyone doing anything that could cause them embarrassment. The only real difference to how it used to be is that people now have to opt in rather than be given the opportunity to opt out. In the case of a forum such as this, people have signed up to, and given some of their personal details to, LPGForum.co.uk. As long as it remains LPGForum.co.uk nothing has changed irrespective of who runs it and where it is hosted. There would be nothing to stop you moving from one hosting site to another and the users wouldn't know the difference, in the same way that a different admin could take over responsibility and the users wouldn't notice the difference. It is still the same forum they originally signed up to and gave their details to.

A little bit of research and GDPR doesn't apply as the forum is not an 'economic enterprise'. In other words, nobody is making money out of it or benefiting from the personal data that is held, see https://www.itgovernance.eu/blog/en/doe ... pply-to-me

Update:

Thank you for the continued interest in this forum, and Simon for badgering me. As it stands I am going to leave the forum hosted on my servers for the time being. There is effort required to move to a new host, and migrate to an updated version of phpBB so best I feel to maintain the status quo for now and add a few tweaks.

I am looking for a couple of members who would like to take over the administration of the forum. Ideally someone who has had experience of phpBB to enable some of the add ons to be updated and tweaked. FTP access can be provided and start looking what would be involved to move to a new host in the future, and most importantly migrate to a new version of phpBB.

It would also be helpful to have a few more moderators.

The question I would like to pose is what to do with new members. Currently all new member applications are manually reviewed and if they appear to be legitimate are approved. There are a lot of member applications daily. This could be set to auto approval to enable new members to access the forum quickly. The down side of this is that spammers will also get access and will have spammed the forum before they are taken down.

Certainly domains that are known to have prolific spammers are also blocked. Unfortunately this has the negative effect that potential members who use for example gmail.com will not have access. Should these domains be permitted ?

These are questions that the new admin and moderators I am sure can answer. Please PM me your member names and email addresses if you would like to be considered as an admin or moderator.

I will be travelling for a while at the end of this month so best to get information to me ASAP.

Thanks

Damiam

Welcome to the new mods Brian_H and GilbertD who join john_d and Talkingcars. Some more names have been put forward and if you would like to become a Mod or more importantly an administrator send me a private message.

User registration has been re-enabled.

The domain ban is still in place for the ones that have prolific spammers. These can reviewed as an when. For reference specific exclusions can be added for email addresses if access is requested.

Thanks for the continued interest and support.

Damian
