I had my LPG system serviced just before Christmas. I mentioned a gas smell and asked the servicing garage (LPG specialist) to investigate.

They identified that 6 (of 8 ) injectors were leaking, the car has done just over 100k miles on LPG and these injectors. All 8 were replaced and I was told these were the last 8 in UK and more would have to come from the Netherlands. Not that mattered at the time as I had all mine replaced.

I could still smell gas and returned to the garage, they identified that two of these new injectors were faulty and would be replaced. Except now there are none available in the UK and will have to wait for a new delivery in this country.

The car runs poorly on LPG now and flags up an engine management fault. I presume that gas is leaking so much that insufficient fuel is being injected into the cylinders.

So, my questions are: Is leaking injectors common? Are replacements often faulty? Is it usual for there to be a lack of spares available?

From what others have said (hopefully some will contribute on this point) its not uncommon if they have the BRC lube system where it injects lube fluid into the lpg pipes before the injectors to have problems.

Depends if they were new injectors or used as to if its common to find faulty ones, though if they were the last available they may have been returns.

Tinley Tech are now the official BRC uk distributor since BRCGB went bust. http://tinleytech.co.uk/ It would be worth asking them about availability?

Might help to identify the injectors you require or currently have first (some are better than others) And the ECU in question if you know, as others on here may be able to advise better or alternative injectors. It also might be helpful to findout what the engine management fault is (The petrol ecu will be logging a fault code, knowing what this is might give more of an idea whats wrong?)

Also on the leaking (which i missed you saying the first time) it should be fairly easy to find whats leaking - Soapy water should allow you to locate the leak(s) fairly easily. The location may help explain whats failed?

The garage servicing my LPG system found the leaking injectors and fitted the new ones.

They also identified the leak on two of the replacements. I'm not involved apart from paying and now using petrol all the time until resolved (=more expense).

The injectors were sourced from a company in Cambridgeshire. I'm now waiting to hear when a new delivery is arriving to them so the garage can fit them.

I asked this question as i was surprised that there were no more than 8 injectors in the UK.

At 50 quid a pop I doubt there's that much demand for them so Tinley Tech (the new BRC importers and based in Cambridgeshire) are unlikely to keep huge numbers in stock. If they were new, and from TT, and are leaking, then they can be returned as faulty. If you've got two that are currently leaking and 6 of the 8 were leaking before, why didn't they use the two non-leaking ones from the old set?

Theres also a couple of types listed on Tinley Tech's website - We don't know which type he has, or if there is any other types (given the 100k put on them, it may be they are a different type to the ones listed etc, and if no longer fitted to current systems very possible that only a few are kept in stock as you say). But as you say even as a stopgap the old ones would be an improvement over the leaking new ones. IF thats the source of the leak of course.

BRC injectors have a colour coded label, the colour points to the flow rate. For each colour there are a couple of types, one type is held in place on the rail with a circlip (injector has a groove for the circlip), other type is held in place on the rail with a nut (injector has threads). The rail is designed for only one type, so not only do you need to get the colour right you also need to get the type of fitment right unless you want to buy a new rail too (which would then also mean 8 new injectors not just 6). Even changing type of rail isn't always straightforward because depending on what BRC system (electronics) you have the rail may have other fittings where sensors fit.

What colour injectors and type of fitting are yours? Have you asked TinleyTech if they have any?

Did your car run OK before the service? Were the injectors supposedly leaking from the injector body itself (I've seen this on maybe 10 BRC injectors but the most I've seen leak from the body on one vehicle was 2 on a V8), from the seal where they fit on the rail, or were they allowing unmetered gas to flow through them into the engine? In the latter case I wouldn't have expected the car to have driven well on LPG before the service...

I've previously mentioned BRC injectors being damaged on installs with BRC's lube system (of the type which forces lube fluid to flow through them). This can cause injectors to leak unmetered gas into the engine but more often than not just causes them not to meter gas properly (without a leak), which causes drive-ability problems.

It's just about feasible that you could get to the point of having 6 injectors leaking unmetered gas into the engine while the car was still drive-able on LPG but seems very unlikely. Quite a coincidence if 2 out of 6 or 8 newly supplied injectors also leaked (in any way).

Did you get your old leaking injectors back, or did the firm dispose of them for you?
